Persons aged 15 years and over Personal Robbery. Persons aged 15 years and over > 58,900 persons were victims of at least 1 robbery > 770,600 persons were victims of at least 1 assault > 44,100 persons aged 18 years & over were victims of at least 1 sexual assault. > In total 841,500 persons aged 15 years and over were victims of 1 or more of these selected personal crimes.
Personal Robbery > 91,400 incidents of robbery with 68% of victims experiencing only 1 incident. > 21,300 of victims reporting that the most recent incident had occurred in the street or in other open land, while the victim's home was the next most often location.
Home Robbery > 427,100 households overall were victims of either a break-in or an attempted break-in
Assault > An estimated 2,613,400 incidents of assault occurred.
Sexual Assault > There were an estimated 44,100 persons aged 18 years and over who were victims of at least 1 sexual assault.
Reporting To Police The proportion of victims that reported the most recent incident to police varied depending on the type of offence: > 74% for household victims of break-in > 31% for household victims of attempted break-in > 90% for household victims of motor vehicle theft > 38% for victims of robbery > 31% for victims of assault.
Injury Deaths > Most child deaths are of infants aged less than 1 year (68% of deaths of 0-14 year olds).
Transport Accidents > When infant deaths are included, there were 1,473 child injury deaths. Pregnancy > 40% to 50% of pregnant mothers involved in a car crash (if she suffers from serious injuries) will have a miscarriage.
Personal Safety Alarms > A woman is raped in America every 46 seconds. That’s 78 women every 1 hour.
Baby Medicine > An Arizona study found that the combined success rate of the 4 most popular delivery methods of giving a child medicine was a failing 37%.
Driving > 54% of adult drivers admit to driving while drowsy, 28% said they have actually fallen asleep while driving. > The Harvard Medical School’s Sleep Division estimates that 250,000 drivers fall asleep at the wheel daily. > The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there may be as many as 100,000 crashes from driver fatigue each year, an estimated 1,550 deaths, 71,000 people injured.
Dog Attacks > More than 4.7 million people annually. Survey by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in USA ("CDC"). > 800,000 bites per year - 1 out of every 6 - are serious enough to require medical attention. > 70% of dog bite victims are children. > 44,000 dog bites to the face are reported each year.
Home Burglaries Most burglaries occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. when no one is likely to be at home. > Every 1 minute* in Australia someone is burgled. > According to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics only 5% of break and enter crimes are solved by the police. > Burglary offenses cost victims an estimated $4.3 billion in lost property; the average dollar loss per burglary offense was $1,991.
Car Burglaries > 260 cars are stolen in Australia daily
Missing Children Thousands of children are reported missing every day.... Many are never found. Many of the abductions end tragically in rape, assault and death > 797,500 children reported missing each day. > 28 plus people are reported missing every day in New South Wales. > 10,600 people were reported missing in NSW and more than 30,000 Australia wide. > 65% of people reported missing are under the age of 18.
Home Accidents 2.8 million home accidents every year are where victims visit an Accident & Emergency Department for treatment - around 1 million are children under 15 years old, with over half of them under 5 years old. > Millions more minor cases are treated at home. > 4,000 deaths every year due to accidents in the home > 300,000 pensioners are so seriously injured by a home accident that they require hospital treatment. > 11 children each year are killed as a result of drowning. The most at risk are 1 and 2 year olds.
Bathroom Accidents One way that most people don't even consider that children can be harmed in the bathroom is by drowning in the toilet. > Child drownings claim thousands of lives every year, and many of them happen with their parents close by. > Did you know that a child can drown in less than 1 inch of water in less than 90 seconds? Most parents of drowned children felt they were supervising them or the child was out of sight for just a few minutes. > Unfortunately, a few minutes are all it can take for a curious toddler to topple into the toilet and drown. > Another common misconception is that a parent will hear some noise if their child is drowning. Drowning is usually a silent occurrence. > Most of the time there is no splashing or calling for help. > It can take only 5 seconds for a toddler to suffer third degree burns from water from bath hot water taps. > 1 child under 5 every day is admitted to hospital with scalds caused by bath water.
Swimming Pool In 2005, there were 3,582 fatal unintentional drownings, averaging 10 deaths per day. > More than 1 in 4 fatal drowning victims are children 14 and younger. For every child who dies from drowning, another 4 received emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.
Elderly and Home Safety Recent statistics highlight how vulnerable our elderly population are to accidents in the home - out of 4,000 deaths every year, 1,300 victims – just under a third – were over 75. > Every single day over 1,500 people over the age of 60 have a fall and need to be taken to hospital. > Many of these accidents can be avoided simply by taking some basic steps in making your home safer.
